LiPo or Li-ion for FPV: Which Battery Should You Use?
The choice between LiPo and Li-ion comes down to what you fly. LiPo packs deliver strong bursts of current, and Li-ion packs deliver the most energy for their weight.
LiPo: power for punchy flying
LiPo (lithium polymer) packs can deliver very high current, which is what freestyle and racing need for fast throttle changes. They are relatively cheap and available in every size, but they carry less energy for their weight than Li-ion, and they need careful handling.
Li-ion: energy for long flights
Li-ion packs, usually built from 18650 or 21700 cells, store more energy per gram, so they give longer flight time for the same weight. The cells give less peak current, so they suit efficient cruising, such as long-range and cinematic flying, rather than aggressive throttle work.
Reading the label
The S number is the cell count, and it sets the voltage: each cell is 4.2 V when full, so 4S is 16.8 V, 6S is 25.2 V and 12S is 50.4 V. Capacity, in mAh, sets how long the pack lasts. The C rating, or a continuous amps figure, sets how much current it can give.
Choose the cell count for your motors and ESC, the capacity for your flight time, and check that the pack's continuous discharge is above your drone's peak current. Check the connector, XT60 or XT90, before you buy, or use an adapter.
Using lithium packs safely
- Charge with a proper balance charger, at a sensible rate, and never leave a charging pack unattended
- Do not fly a pack down to empty: land while there is still charge in reserve
- Store packs at a partial charge, in a fireproof bag or box, away from heat
- Do not use a swollen, punctured or crashed pack
- Cold reduces capacity: keep packs warm before a winter flight
