Building a Long-Range FPV Drone: A Parts Checklist

Published 30 September 2026

A long-range drone is built around efficiency. Every part is chosen to spend less energy per minute of flight, and every link, radio and video, is chosen to still work when the drone is far away.

Frame

Long-range builds usually start at 7 inch and go up to 13 inch and beyond. A bigger frame turns a bigger propeller, which is more efficient, and carries more battery. Choose a frame with room for a large battery, GPS and your video system, and check the maximum propeller size it takes.

Motors and propellers

Choose a low-KV motor with a large stator and turn a large, low-pitch propeller. That combination is efficient at cruise. Two-blade propellers are usually the most efficient, and three-blade ones give more grip when you need to manoeuvre.

Aim for a build that hovers at around a third of throttle. That leaves thrust in reserve and keeps cruise current low.

ESC and flight controller

Pick an ESC with continuous current comfortably above the motors' peak draw, and a cell-count rating that covers your battery. Choose a flight controller with a spare UART for GPS, and firmware that supports navigation and return-to-home, such as INAV or ArduPilot, or Betaflight with GPS rescue.

Battery

Long range wants energy, not burst current. Li-ion packs store more energy for their weight than LiPo, which is why they are the usual choice for cruising. Match the cell count to your motors' KV, and check the pack's continuous discharge rating against your cruise and peak current.

Video and radio

Use a radio link that reaches as far as you fly: sub-GHz ExpressLRS at 868 or 915 MHz is the common choice for range. For video, fit good antennas on both ends and keep them clear of carbon fiber. Digital systems give a sharper picture, analog systems weigh less and degrade gradually. Where radio links are unreliable, a fiber-optic link is an alternative.

Before the first long flight

  • Set failsafe and return-to-home, and test them at a short distance
  • Check the GPS lock before arming, every time
  • Measure your cruise current and calculate the range from your battery's real capacity, not the label
  • Test the radio link range at low power on the ground before relying on it
  • Fly a short first flight and check that motors, ESCs and battery are not hot on landing
